The daring Voodoo Doughnut Burger from the Original, in Portland, Ore. The Moment sent the style blogger Elizabeth Spiridakis, who’s spending the summer biking around Portland, Ore., to check out the next level of burger insanity.

When you order the Voodoo Doughnut Burger from the Original, the newish spot in downtown Portland, Ore., that is a super-designy restaurant that wants you to think it’s just a hipster diner, you are given the option of a side of soup, salad or fries. Which, let’s get real here, is a bit of a joke: if you are committing to consuming a beef patty covered in cheddar cheese and sandwiched between a glazed pastry from Portland’s famed all-night doughnut shop, getting it avec greens seems a tad ridiculous. (The fries are excellent — definitely double-fried.)
The bottom line: a doughnut wrapped around a cheeseburger is delicious. The doughnut is halved like a bagel, toasted and buttered. (Just accept it: at this point you can balk at nothing). The burger isn’t too big, the cheese is sharp and perfectly melted. You take the first bite and you think, Yes, this is a glazed sugar doughnut and a cheeseburger … and yes, this is amazing … so, so wrong equaling so, so right. The only-in-Portland cost? $7.25. Tip generously.

Before you go, make sure you are on the high end of the self-esteem meter that day. Maybe you take along a handsome partner in crime to share it with? This somehow softens the blow of ordering what may be the most outrageous step away from sanity you’ve taken in a while. If you are tough, afterward you can try the Pure Joy. Oh, that’s a pie based on an Almond Joy. I couldn’t quite make it to that point, but next time I’ll just order it first.
