Downtown AMC theater to open doors with KC Film Festival
The new Mainstreet Theatre (formerly the Empire) will have its shakedown cruise during the Kansas City FilmFest, April 22-26. The grand opening will be a week later, on May 1.

There’s a lot of news coming out of Kansas City FilmFest, the festival created last year with the merger of FilmFest-Kansas City and the Kansas City Filmmakers Jubilee.
The biggest headline: FilmFest will be April 22-26 in AMC’s new Mainstreet Theatre, 1400 Main St. Old timers may remember it as the old Empire Theatre, one of KC’s venerable movie palaces.
“The film festival is a chance for us to have a soft launch of the facility,” AMC spokesman Justin Scott said. “Festival attendees will be getting a sneak peek at the theater before the official opening.”
After sitting empty for more than a decade, the building has undergone months of reconstruction and renovation as part of the Power & Light District. It features six digital auditoriums, three of which will be used for FilmFest.
The other three are dinner-and-a-movie Cinema Suites, a concept introduced last fall at AMC’s Studio 30 megaplex in Olathe. We’re talking plush recliner seating, atmospheric lighting and a wide array of food and drink options. They’ll go on line on May 1 with the “official” opening of the Mainstreet.
More good news: The Marquee Bar & Grill, the full-service restaurant in the theater’s lobby area, has opened for business. You can get a look at the menu at http://www.themarqueekc.com/.

The Mainstreet Theater, also commonly referred to as The Empire Theater, is a historic theater located at 1400 Main Street in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. The theater was landmarked and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in February 2007.

Dad had told me stories of going to the movies in KC when he was a young teenager. He said there was Theater Row, he said he could pay 25 cents and go from one theater to another all day! Wonder if this was one of the theater's he went to?
