The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a voluntary public work relief program that operated from 1933 to 1942 in the United States for unemployed, unmarried men ages 18–25 and eventually expanded to ages 17–28.

My Dad was in the CCC when he was 17 in 1939. His family lived in Rich Hill, MO. His father died unexpectedly when he was 10, which left his Mother with 6 children and no income. His Mother signed him up for the CCC.

In 1933, enrollees had to be unmarried, unemployed American males between, 5 to 6.5 feet tall, over 107 lbs, and with at least six teeth. The men would receive compensation of $1 a day for a six-month term, with $25 to be sent home and $5 distributed in cash each month.

My Dad told me the government shipped him and the other teenagers from the Rich Hill area on empty train box cars in the winter. His feet almost froze and he had frost bite on one big toe. He suffered from Gout all his life. He said Gout was some of the worst pain her ever experienced and my Dad could with stand a great deal of pain and NEVER complain!

Description
A form of arthritis characterized by severe pain, redness, and tenderness in joints.
Pain and inflammation occur when too much uric acid crystallizes and deposits in the joints.
Symptoms of gout include severe pain, redness, and swelling in joints, often the big toe. Attacks can come suddenly, often at night.
During an acute attack, anti-inflammatory medications can help relieve pain and shorten the length of the attack. Patients with chronic gout can use behavioral modification such as diet, exercise, and decreased intake of alcohol to help minimize the frequency of attacks. Additionally, patients with chronic gout are often put on medications such as colchicine.
